College Path, Freshfield

This dwelling’s design philosophy is firmly rooted in a language that expresses the homes sustainability and respects its surroundings.

The scale, shape and proportions of the proposed dwelling have been deliberately engineered to avoid dominating the compact site and ensure subservience to the existing surrounding properties. The new dwelling achieves this is by placing the new dwelling on the footprint of the existing outbuilding and setting it back from the building line next door. This ensures that the impact of the new dwelling is mitigated as much as possible as most of its volume is simply a replacement of the volume that already exists. The designs L-shaped cross section allows the first floor of next door all the rights of amenity it currently enjoys with respect to light and views whilst enjoying the benefit of looking down onto and over the new dwellings green roof, rather than the austere traditional roof that the rooms currently look down onto.

The building materials are sourced from ecologically sound natural sources and intended to ground the building in its natural surroundings. The materials extend into the building with natural exposed concrete walls internally, giving the inside a strong connection outside, which can be appreciated through the fully glazed south elevation at ground floor. Sustaninble technologies will be implemented to ensure that this is Formbys first ever zero carbon home.
