International Housing Design Competition : Stockton-on-Tees
Shortlisted as one of five finalists out of over 100 entries in a major international design competition for developers Urban Splash in collaboration with Muse Developments and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
This housing scheme forming part of the broader Northshore masterplan, encourages families to flourish. Characterised by the generous provision of external spaces, unifying both site and dwelling. Connected spaces for play and appropriation run through the masterplan to sheltered, private terraces that step through each individual home.
A variety of house types and sizes are proposed, all designed with future flexibility and adaptability in mind as families grow and, with age contract. Perimeter stacked deck accessed family homes (initially 3, 4 or 5 bedroom) shelter a matt of low-rise family homes (3 & 4 bed). These house types, ordered into traditional, but splayed street patterns are oriented in order to allow south light to penetrate into both dwellings and courtyards. Such streets form part of the sites SUDs system and reed beds provide a constant reminder of the rivers presence from deep within the site. A permeable edge to the river is created by the narrow ‘pier house’ type. A public park runs parallel to the river. |
