Supported Housing : Preston Guild

The masterplan was to creates a place that encourages families to flourish and expand..

A green zone or ‘lung’ sits in the centre of the site with the existing mature tress retained. Roofs are angled and splayed to maximise natural daylight into the site. Rear gardens bleed out onto a communal strip, offering a sophisticated approach to social interaction. By creating a public space dedicated to the growth of children under the supervision of adults who also develop their own pastimes within the same spaces it will offer a degree of permeability between private and social spaces. This space is overlooked on both sides by the rear elevations of the dwellings offering a natural sense of security.

In order to maximise the site we have designed the units in a terraced configuration to make reference to the St Ignatius Conservation Area. Connected public spaces of appropriation and play run through the scheme, whilst sheltered, private terraces and courtyards occupy each home. These spaces offer each home and family the capacity to expand. It was important to create facades that offer some permeability and animation both during daylight and evening hours with the spaces in front feeling like organic extensions of their homes offering opportunies to live outside as well as inside their homes
